Health Risks

  • Cleaning up human blood, tissue and fecal matter is extremely dangerous and should only be undertaken by trained professionals.  The material is so hazardous that EPA regulations mandate that it be placed in a specially marked red bag and placed inside a special marked box and disposed of in an EPA approved incineration.  It is a violation of federal law to place any contaminated material in a regular waste receptacle.
  • Crews who handle biohazard material must wear full PPE (personal protective equipment) at all times to include a full-face respirator, waterproof body suit, and layered gloves with neoprene, Kevlar and latex over the skin.
  • All personnel who work in the field are inoculated against Hepatitis A and B as well as tetanus so help safeguard them against exposure.
  • Human tissue and fecal matter can contain a wide variety of viruses, bacteria and parasites, like the eggs from hookworms, flatworms, and pinworms.
  • All porous materials must be disposed of, and hard surfaces must be disinfected with hospital grade disinfectants, virucides,  and fungicide, which is only available commercially.
